International Symposium on Marine and Terrestrial Ecosystems and Global Changes across Triassic and Jurassic SystemsNovember 24–27, 2026 | Chongqing, China

First Circular

1. Introduction

The Triassic-Jurassic transition represents a pivotal interval in Earth’s history, marked by catastrophic events including the Permian-Triassic mass extinction, Carnian Pluvial Episode, Triassic-Jurassic mass extinction, Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event, and Jurassic greenhouse warming. These events fundamentally reshaped global biodiversity, climate, and biogeochemical cycles.

Chongqing city and its adjacent regions yield well-exposed and continuous marine and terrestrial Triassic sequences, continental Jurassic stratigraphic sections, rich in diverse fossilbiota(invertebrates, plants, palynomorphs, dinosaurs), national and global Geoparks for petrified forest, dinosaurs, and energy resources (oil, gas, coal and shale gas). These archives provide unparalleled opportunities for global change research and international correlation, while also serving as unique natural heritage for scientific outreach, education, and sustainable tourism.

Under the sponsorship of the Subcommissions of Triassic and Jurassic of the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS), as well as support from the Department of Earth Sciences, National Natural Science Foundation of China(NSFC), Palaeontological Society of China (PSC), this international symposium will bring together global expertiseto advance understanding of Triassic-Jurassic Earth-life systems. It aims to showcase cutting-edge research, foster international collaboration, and promote science communication and cultural tourism, highlighting China’s leadership in this field.

2. Symposium venue and date

The symposium will be held at the Beibei District of Chongqing City, one of the largest cities in southwestern China with long history and colorful culture and natural heritages. This city has convenient access links to the world by a variety of international and domestic flight network, as well as the highway and bullet train systems to major cities in China.

Participants: About 140professional and early career researchers and students will join us at Chongqing for this symposium, including ca. 30-40 international delegates from Sweden, UK, Germany, USA, Netherlands, Norway, Ireland, Romania, Hungary, India, Japan, Argentina, France, Thailand, etc.
